BIOGRAPHY

Now that's a hard-earned voice! - Glen Hansard

Inspired by the great songwriters from American and Irish Folk, Country and Rock Peter Deaves' voice is the thing that stands out the most. It is simply golden.

From the banks of the River Mersey to the forest outside of Paris, the atypical trajectory of singer-songwriter and composer-performer Peter Deaves begins in Liverpool, his city of birth and inspiration. “I've traveled a lot in my life, but I carry Liverpool with me” says the expatriate with the Scouse accent, recalling an extraordinary journey passing through London, Chicago (during the campaign of Barack Obama) then Colombia, Paris, where he played tirelessly for years while organising underground artistic events to pay rent and today the bucolic setting around Fontainebleau.

Like Peter Deaves' elegantly rustique lifestyle, Ceol Agus Grá, his first album, celebrates "ancient forms of life". Nostalgia for youth and lost loves run through this collection of folk songs lit up by live instrumentation including lapsteel, double bass, mandolin, banjos, flugelhorns, Irish flute and the analog warmth of tube amps.

This organic coherence extended to the album cover, illustrated by typography borrowed from Barry Lyndon and black and white “chambre” photograph taken by French photographer Martin Colombet
